Tis the Season for Renovations and Upgrades in Hoboken!

You read it right! Construction will soon begin to enhance and renovate Washington Street. The project will also add 15 new traffic lights, each with a pedestrian countdown signals, along with other important and necessary safety/design features.   In 2015 alone, nearly a fifth of all of Hoboken’s streets were repaved. More repaving continues to progress into the new year.

Water Main Upgrades

Aside from the re-pavement of our city streets, the entire water main system will be replaced on Washington Street from Observer Highway to 15th street as part of the Washington Street Project. The city of Hoboken will be making a $5.2 million investment in priority upgrades to the city’s water mains in the year ahead. This proactive approach will make for a more reliable and sustainable system for the long run.

New and Renovated Parks

Over the past year or so, the city council and the community has made incredible progress on bringing more park space to the western side of the city. Not only does this make for beautiful scenery, but it alleviates flooding through green infrastructure park designs such as rain gardens, hundreds of new trees, and the City Hall Demonstration Project. Expect more parks, less flooding, soccer fields, and renovated features throughout the parks of Hoboken!

 

Transportations Improvements

Hoboken is making it easier to safely get around town with all different modes of transportation. Hudson bike share boasts over 10,000 members! This program launched in the fall of 2015 and been on a roll. After just one year, more than 11,000 members have taken 137,000 trips through the program, which operates without any taxpayer dollars. To sign up , visit http://www.hudsonbikeshare.com . Pay by phone parking is now available! Drivers can now use their mobile phone to easily pay for parking using the Parkmobile application. The app provides reminders before the parking session expires and allows users to add more time directly from the app without retuning to the meter or car. Another improvement to add to the list is new public parking garage for NW Hoboken. The planning process for the garage will start in 2017.

Hudson Place Pizza Cook Off!

Every year, Hudson Place Realty hosts a highly anticipated annual office cook off. Agents, spouses and close HPR friends are invited to prepare their best dish within a predetermined theme. Winners of last year’s competition, Gerard Stier and his wife Beverly, chose homemade pizza – no store bought dough allowed – as this year’s challenge.

The event was held at Hudson Table, a boutique cooking school that offers hands on and chef-led demo classes in a modern kitchen studio at Edge Lofts. Hudson Table’s talented chefs judged the competition this year and chose a unique pear, prosciutto and brie pizza prepared by Taryn Byron as the winner. Runners up were Jake Fowler with a hearty meat pie and Rita Sisti with a caramelized onion pizza.

Prepping Your Home for Winter Weather

With the leaves falling and the temperatures cooling, there are many things that come to mind including all the preparations for the upcoming holidays and events, but there are some preparations that may slip your mind. Check out this checklist for the upcoming days to help you make sure all is ready for winter.

Check safety devices. Test all smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in the house, and replace batteries as needed. Check the expiration date on the kitchen fire extinguisher and replace it if needed.

Seal gaps where mice could enter. Speaking of critters, take a close look around the interior and exterior of your home and cover any and all gaps you find. A heavy-duty to cover exterior vents and steel wool can be used to close small gaps on the interior.

Add weather stripping. If you have old weather stripping that has loosened, remove it and replace it with new material.

Swap seasonal clothes.  Now that October is over, it’s time to settle into more predictable fall and winter weather. Gather up stray sandals and lightweight clothing that you don’t plan to wear again until spring, and pack it away.

Decorate with layers of warmth. Get toasty indoors with cozy throws, thicker curtains and soft rugs. If you haven’t done so yet, swap out your bedding for thicker blankets and fluffy duvets.

Put up storm windows and doors. If you use storm windows or doors and haven’t put them up yet, now is the time.

Inspect the roof. Problems like damaged shingles and worn-out seals around vent pipes and chimneys are much easier to remedy if you catch them early.

Hoboken's Washington Street Redesign

In the past few weeks, the City Council has been discussing a recent proposal for the reconstruction and reconfiguration of Washington Street. The proposed plan includes the introduction of many improvements; safety improvements including increased lighting and new traffic signals with coordinated crossing signals for pedestrians, reworking the sidewalks and roads to include a bike lane and improved bus stops. These features are intended to even further increase the “walkability” of the most “walkable” city in the U.S. – Find out more here.
