10 Tips for Beginning Gardeners

The rewards of gardening are great — fresh air, exercise, beauty and relaxation, to name a few. But designing and planting your very first garden can feel like an overwhelming task. Luckily, gardens are surprisingly forgiving creations, and the best way to learn is by simply diving in. It’s hot outside, and in the midst of planning your July barbecue and prepping the pool for months of heavy use, remember that your plants are also waiting for a cool summer drink. Water, prune, feed and plant; before you know it fall will be here. And while you’re doing all that, enjoy your summer garden too, admiring your edible bounty while keeping an eye out for any signs of plant stress. Here are 10 tips to help get a new garden off on the right foot.

The Saint Anne’s Italian Festival is nearly 106 years old, and celebrates a tradition derived from Italy that is over 600 years old. Set up for the festival has begun as of last week. Every year around this time, the festival runs for 5 days at Seventh and Jefferson streets – St. Ann’s Square Hoboken, NJ. Some of the favored attractions for the feast include carnival rides, crafts, games and celebrations of Italian culture, as well as a contest at 3 p.m. Saturday to determine the best pizza in Hoboken. Come join the fun and get involved!

Movies Under the Stars

It’s that time of year again! These FREE Outdoor Movie Screenings take place at Pier A Park, overlooking the beautiful Manhattan Skyline, located on First St. and Frank Sinatra Drive in Hoboken. Movies under the stars begin at 9:00 pm in June and July and around 8:15 pm in August. For the best seating, come early and bring a blanket or comfortable chair. You may bring food (no overpriced popcorn purchase necessary!), but alcohol consumption is not permitted and subject to a fine. Also, Assisted listening devices will be available upon request.

July 13 – The Martian (2015), 2h 24min., Rated PG-13; Golden Globe winner for Best Motion Picture and Best Actor, Matt Damon, stars as Astronaut Mark Watney who is presumed dead after a fierce storm during a manned mission to Mars and left behind by his crew. Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring him home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible, rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return.

Nominated for Best Picture of the Year, Best Actress and Best Screenplay by the Academy Awards and Best Actress by the Golden Globes, Saoirse Ronan stars as an Irish Immigrant landing in 1950s Brooklyn. She quickly falls into a romance with a local. When her past catches up with her, she must choose between two countries and the lives that exist within.

July 27 – Jurassic World (2015), 2h 4 min., Rated PG-13; Winner of the Hollywood Film Awards for Best Visual Effects and nominated by the MTV Movie Awards for Movie of the Year, stars Chris Pratt and Bryce Dallas Howard. A new theme park is built on the original site of Jurassic Park. Everything is going well until the park’s newest attraction, a genetically modified giant stealth-killing machine, escapes containment and goes on a killing spree.

Nominated for Best Animated Film by the BAFTA Awards, the Academy of Science Fistion, Fantasy & Horror Films and more, is voiced by an all-star cast including, Sandra Bullock, Jon Hamm, Michael Keaton and more. Ever since the dawn of time, the Minions have lived to serve the most despicable of masters. Protective leader Kevin, teenage rebel Stuart and lovable little Bob are recruited by Scarlet Overkill, a super-villain who, alongside her inventor husband Herb, hatches a plot to take over the world. Join Kevin, Stuart and Bob as they try to stop this villain and save all of Minionkind…from annihilation.

August 10 – The Peanuts Movie (2015), 1h 28 min., Rated G; Golden Globe nominee for Best Motion Picture, Charlie Brown, Snoopy, Lucy, Linus and the rest of the beloved “Peanuts” gang make their big-screen debut, in state of the art 3D animation. Charlie Brown, the world’s most beloved underdog, embarks upon an epic and heroic quest, while his best pal, the lovable beagle Snoopy, takes to the skies to pursue his arch-nemesis, the Red Baron. From the imagination of Charles M. Schulz and the creators of the ICE AGE films, THE PEANUTS MOVIE will prove that every underdog has his day.

August 17 – Inside Out (2015), 95 min., Rated PG; Academy Awards and Golden Globe winner for Best Animated Feature Film, is a story about when young Riley is uprooted from her Midwest life when her father starts a new job in San Francisco. Guided by Joy, Fear, Anger, Disgust and Sadness are all the emotions that live in Headquarters, the control center inside Riley’s mind. As they help her advise her through everyday life, turmoil ensues. Joy, Riley’s main and most important emotion, tries to keep things positive as the emotion conflict on how best to navigate a new city, house, and school.
